Psycho-emotional factors are an integral part of well-rounded patient care and experience. Exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic, hospitalized patients often miss important life milestones and celebrations. In 2019, Montefiore Nyack Hospital committed to recognizing their patients’ milestones with a celebratory meal.
This initiative began in the mother-baby unit by providing new parents with a way to celebrate the arrival of their child. Parents are offered a beautifully designed menu with gourmet food options such as lobster, filet mignon, an array of side dishes and a selection of decadent desserts as an unexpected treat. Meals are served on linen tablecloths and feature a bottle of sparkling cider complete with a custom-designed label. There are vegan, vegetarian and kosher selections for those with dietary needs.
The program has expanded to recognize inpatient birthdays, anniversaries and other special occasions, and is now offered to joint replacement patients. Providing these unexpected amenities enhances patients’ experiences and offers them an opportunity to celebrate despite hospitalization.
The program's success was immediately recognized and quickly verified by supporting data. Since its inception, the program has doubled the hospital's Press Ganey Meal scores to reach and remain in the 99th percentile.
