Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) remains the leading candidate in the republican-controlled House, but has been unable to secure the necessary support. Absent a Speaker, House members-elect can’t be sworn into office, committees can’t organize and legislative work is stalled. Senate Majority Leader Schumer will continue to lead the Senate with a narrow majority of 51 democrats and 49 republicans.
