The nurse's role in emergency department diagnostic safety
Dec. 1
Webinar
Noon - 1 p.m.
This event is open to members only.
This session will explore how to improve diagnosis by engaging the full emergency department diagnostic team and leveraging the experience of nurses and others engaged in patient care.
Traditionally, the diagnostic process has been viewed as an individual activity, usually performed by physicians. The inherent uncertainty of the diagnostic process makes it highly susceptible to errors. The stress of the ED makes this area particularly high risk. Researchers estimate that there may be seven million cases of ED-based diagnostic error per year, with nearly half having the potential for patient harm.
By the end of this session, participants will be able to:
- describe three principles of distributed cognition in the context of diagnostic safety;
- describe differences in perspective between physicians and nurses that affect diagnostic safety; and
- implement strategies to improve communication among clinicians during diagnosis in the ED.
Speaker:
Milisa Manojlovich, PhD, RN, FAAN, Professor, University of Michigan School of Nursing and Director, Pivot Hub
